The project behind the map

Autumn colour, seen through a thousand cameras.

Ruska is a map of the colour changing across Finland. It began with a simple question: where was autumn colour already showing?

01 / The story

Why Ruska was made

A film location question became a way to follow the season across a whole country.

It started with a missing map

Uli Futschik, a filmmaker and former quantum physicist with a PhD, was planning to film Finland’s autumn colour and wanted to know where it was showing. She found Ruskavahti, a road-camera map run by Visit Finland with Dagmar and Accenture in 2022 and 2023. It had stopped, and no replacement was available. That inspired Uli and Koncept VR to build Ruska as an independent project.

Who is behind it?

Uli and Koncept VR make stories with 360° video and VR. Their work often asks what a camera sees and what it misses. For Ruska, the cameras were already across Finland. The project turns their pictures into a view of the season.

Why AI is part of the work

The team uses AI vision tools to suggest which pixels show trees and shrubs, and to help review many camera views. Candidate masks are checked against pictures from different dates and quality rules; difficult views are reviewed, and uncertain views are left off the map. AI also helped audit a random sample of the published dots. The models disagreed in places, so the results are reported as a range rather than one exact accuracy number.
